The consulting firm Birgli AC conducted an analysis of the causes of the shortages of medicines in a number of European countries. They pointed out that the reasons of the problems of supply are multifactorial and diverse, and there is limited quantitative data to single out one primary cause. A patient centric focus should be emphasised, while the impact of the austerity and the economic situation on patient outcomes is reviewed.
